Taiwan Official Boycotts Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Memorial

Taiwan's top representative in Japan says he boycotted this year's memorial
marking the 81st anniversary of the atomic bombing of Nagasaki, accusing the
city of treating Taiwan unfairly.

Lee Yi-yang, head of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office
in Tokyo, said on social media that the seating arrangements at the ceremony
showed Nagasaki was deliberately denying Taiwan's status as a nation and
disregarding its sovereignty and dignity.

Lee instead sent a lower-ranking official after saying Taiwan's designated
seats were not alongside diplomatic missions.

Nagasaki says it invites countries, regions and organizations that have
diplomatic missions in Japan or the United Nations.

Lee has also accused the city of being pro-China and insulting Taiwan.
