Taiwan firms brush off impact of U.S. polysilicon trade curbs

New US trade measures covering imports of polysilicon and related products
are expected to have only a limited effect on Taiwan's solar manufacturers.

That's according to industry representatives, who say that Taiwanese products
would face more favorable tariff treatment than those of major competitors
such as China and several Southeast Asian countries.

Meanwhile, demand for the affected products exceeds supply.

US President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Thursday that
establishes minimum import prices for polysilicon and its derivatives and
imposes an additional 15 percent tariff on polysilicon ingots and downstream
products.

Polysilicon is a high-purity form of silicon used as a raw material in the
production of semiconductors and solar products.

The measures are scheduled to take effect Dec. 4.
