Indonesia drought boosts salt harvest but threatens crops

An El Niño-driven drought is sharply increasing salt production in Indonesia,
even as farmers prepare for worsening heat and crop losses.

In West Java, salt output reached nearly 600 metric tons in July.

That compares with just 25 to 30 tons in the same month last year.

Most Indonesian salt is produced by evaporating seawater in shallow coastal
ponds, making long periods of sunshine especially valuable.

The national weather agency says the dry season is expected to peak this
month and could continue into early 2027.

More than 5-thousand hotspots were detected across Indonesia last month,
raising concerns about wildfires.

While salt producers expect a bumper harvest, crop farmers are being urged to
adjust planting schedules and prepare for prolonged dry conditions.
