National Park Act revisions to open way for charging fees to visit top

The National Park Service has drafted amendments to the National Park Act
that would mean visitors to many of Taiwan's peaks could have to pay by as
early as next year.

According to the park service, the fees would go into a dedicated
conservation fund which would be used to establish ecological protection
zones.

There will also be sharp increases in penalties for environmental violations
to up to 2-million N-T

However, indigenous hunting and gathering activities as well as scientific
research will be exempt from paying the fees.

Officials say the proposal could affect hikers to as many as 76 of Taiwan's
100 highest peaks located inside national parks.

The amendments are still under review.
