August presents astronomical viewing opportunities

The Taipei Astronomical Museum says August is a great month to look up.

The first astronomical event of interest is the so-called Western elongation
of Mercury, occurring tomorrow evening, when Mercury is at its furthest point
from the Sun and visible in the eastern sky.

Venus's Eastern elongation will occur on the 15th. The second planet from the
Sun will be visible at dusk on the western horizon, against a crescent moon.

But the highlight of the month will be the Perseid meteor shower, which will
start around 8pm on Aug. 12th and end at dawn the next day.

With the moon completely waned, there won't be any moonlight interference ...
with around 70 meteors an hour expected to be streaking across the sky.

The observatory recommends that viewers find a location with a wide-open view
and minimal light pollution to enjoy the celestial light show.
