Taiwan Eyes Publicly Funded Prostate Cancer Screenings Next Year

Taiwan is expected to introduce publicly funded prostate cancer screening
next year as cases continue to rise alongside the country's aging population.

Health Minister Shih Chong-liang (石崇良) says the government has commissioned a
comprehensive assessment and hopes to launch the program once funding and
implementation plans are finalized.

Prostate cancer was the third most common cancer among Taiwanese men in 2023
and is now the fifth-leading cause of cancer death.

The Taiwan Urological Association says new cases have nearly quadrupled over
the past two decades, reaching almost 10 thousand in 2023.

More than 28 percent of those patients were diagnosed only after the cancer
had already spread to other parts of the body, highlighting concerns that
many cases are being detected too late.
