The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has set up a dedicated bank account to collect public donations for earthquake relief efforts in Kumamoto, Japan.
The Mega Bank account will accept contributions from August 1st through August 31st to support disaster recovery following Tuesday’s 7.1 magnitude quake.
President Lai Ching-te, Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim, and Premier Cho Jung-tai have each pledged 200-thousand NT, while D-P-P Secretary-General Hsu Kuo-yung is donating one month’s salary to the fund.
The relief effort comes as Japanese authorities grapple with severe damage.
The quake set off an explosion at a mall, toppled a factory chimney and flattened homes in the Kumamoto area on Japan’s southern main island of Kyushu.
