TSMC's Japan fab evacuates staff after strong earthquake
Posted on 2026-07-28 20:10:13
TSMC's semiconductor subsidiary in Japan has evacuated employees after a
powerful earthquake struck Kumamoto Prefecture mid-afternoon.

The company says the evacuation was carried out in line with emergency
procedures and that employee safety was its top priority.

All staff were safely evacuated and were being accounted for.

Taiwan's Ministry of Economic Affairs said other Taiwanese companies
operating in Kumamoto, including Advantech and Delta Electronics, reported
their employees were safe and that their operations had not been affected.

Japanese authorities say the magnitude 7.1 earthquake prompted a tsunami
advisory for nearby coastal areas, but the advisory was lifted within two
hours.

Officials have reported injuries and damage to infrastructure while warning
residents to prepare for possible strong aftershocks.

Authorities say no abnormalities have been reported at nearby nuclear power
plants.

Taiwan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs says it has conveyed its condolences to
the Japan-Taiwan Exchange Association and offered assistance if needed.

It also says Taiwan's representative office in Fukuoka has so far received no
reports of Taiwanese nationals being affected.
