Government defending plans for Yilan high-speed rail
Posted on 2026-07-27 06:52:13
The government is defending its plans to spend 352-billion N-T to extend the
High Speed Rail from Taipei to Yilan.

Critics argue the line will cost 600-billion N-T and will severely impact the
Taiwan Railway's Administration's ticket revenue.

But authorities counter that the new line will reduce traffic on National
Freeway 5 by up to 6-per cent, and free-up Taiwan Railway's capacity for both
its intercity and commuter trains.

The Railway Bureau says the High Speed Rail line will handle more medium- and
long-distance Taipei–Yilan travel.

The Cabinet has approved plans to extend the High Speed Rail from Taipei to
Yilan last Thursday.

The 60.6-kilometer line will connect Nangang Station in Taipei with the
planned Yilan High Speed Rail Station and the journey will take around 28
minutes.
