The Central Weather Administration is warning that aftershocks from Sunday
evening's magnitude 5.6 earthquake could occur over the coming week.

These could be of around magnitude 5, although authorities says some of them
will likely be barely felt due to the depth of the tectonic plates.

Last night's quake was centered in the rural Shuangxi District in the eastern
New Taipei, some 35-kilometers east-southeast of New Taipei City Hall, at a
depth of 95-kilometers.

It was felt stongest in Yilan, New Taipei, Taipei, Taoyuan, Hsinchu County,
Hualien, Taichung and Miaoli, where it measured 3 on the weather
administration's 7-tier intensity scale.

The quake measured a 2 on the on the intensity scale in Keelung, Hsinchu
City, Nantou, Changhua and Yunlin.

The main cause of the quake was the subduction of the Philippine Sea Plate.

The center says other quakes that belong to the same seismic zone include
last December's magnitude 7 earthquake that was centered near Turtle Island
off the coast of Yilan, and the May 1 magnitude 6 earthquake near Yilan.
