Woman who poisoned Australian student gets 11 years, 2 months

A Taiwanese woman has been sentenced to 11 years and two months in prison for
repeatedly poisoning an Australian exchange student in 2023.

The Taipei District Court found Yang guilty of attempted murder, describing
the crime as premeditated and cruel.

According to prosecutors, Yang poisoned then-23-year-old Alex Shorey at least
three times by mixing rodenticide into his food and drinks, leaving him in
critical condition.

Prosecutors say Yang carried out the attacks in an attempt to stop Shorey
from returning to Australia after completing a Chinese-language program in
Taiwan.

The court said Yang showed no remorse and continued poisoning the victim
despite witnessing his suffering.

Shorey was later medically evacuated to Australia, where he recovered.
