Minister of Foreign Affairs Lin Chia-lung has reaffirmed Taiwan's sovereignty claims in the South China Sea while acknowledging that the government is taking a lower-profile approach to asserting them.
Lin says Taiwan's position on its claims in the disputed waters remains unchanged and that disputes should be resolved peacefully in accordance with international law.
He also reiterated that Taiwan-administered Taiping Island is legally an island and that Taiwan has legitimate claims in the South China Sea.
However, Lin says Taiwan has chosen not to actively publicize those claims because of the current geopolitical situation and the overlap between Taipei's and Beijing's territorial claims.
He added that Taiwan needs to maintain strong international support as China continues to expand its influence in the region.
