KMT, TPP-backed referendum proposals pass first reading

Two opposition-led referendum proposals have passed a first reading in the legislature.
The TPP caucus today proposed a referendum on euthanasia, which they say aims to ensure autonomy for those suffering from chronic diseases.
Party chair Huang Kuo-chang today criticized the legislature for moving- in his words- at a "snail's pace..."
saying it made more sense to turn the matter over to the people to decide instead.
If the referendum makes it onto the ballot this November, voters would be asked whether they support assisted suicide for those suffering from unbearable pain or difficult-to-treat diseases.
Huang also said the Central Election Commission is responsible for ensuring that elections and referendums run smoothly.
Meanwhile the KMT-proposed referendum vote would aim to abolish the "nuclear-free homeland" policy.
It would ask voters if they agree with abolishing the policy to ensure stable and sufficient power supply as well as reasonable electricity rates.
Both the proposals have now passed the first reading, and have been handed over to party caucuses for further negotiation ahead of a second reading.
