Taiwan, U.S. are semiconductor partners, not rivals: U.S. scholar

Academics are rejecting U-S President Donald Trump's claim that Taiwan took America's chip industry.
American scholar Michael Cunningham, a senior fellow at the Stimson Center, says Taiwan and the United States are partners rather than competitors in chip production.
He says U-S companies continue to lead in semiconductor design ... while manufacturing is largely handled by Taiwanese firms, calling it a partnership that has benefited both sides.
Trump ... in a CNBC interview early this month … said that Taiwan had "literally took 100 percent" of the semiconductor business ... and predicted the U-S would have up to 60 percent of chip manufacturing by the time he leaves office.
However, Cunningham says that's unrealistic, arguing Taiwan's long-established semiconductor ecosystem cannot be replicated quickly, even as investment in U.S. chip manufacturing grows.
