The general manager of Central Union Oil has been released on 20 million NT bail as prosecutors continue investigating why the company's cooking oil contained excessive amounts of the contaminant.
Prosecutors immediately appealed the bail decision for General Manager Yu Ling-chung, arguing he should remain in custody because of concerns he could destroy evidence or collude with witnesses.
The Taichung District Court also ordered company chairman Tsai Ching-sung released on 20 million NT bail, while the plant manager and 10 other suspects were also granted bail pending further investigation.
Prosecutors allege Central Union manufactured about 1,300 metric tons of contaminated soy-based cooking oil that exceeded the legal limit for benzo[a]pyrene by four times and supplied it to major food processors between April and June.
Those companies then distributed products containing the oil to smaller food manufacturers and restaurants.
