Test results withheld in tainted oil case amid suspected sample fraud

Health authorities say they are withholding test results for cooking oil produced by Central Union Oil after conflicting results raised questions about the reliability of the samples.
The move comes as officials continue investigating how some batches became contaminated with the cancer-causing chemical benzo[a]pyrene.
Health Minister Shih Chung-liang says samples kept by Central Union did not match test results from products made using the company's oil.
Because of those discrepancies, the Food and Drug Administration has decided not to release the latest test results and instead ordered every production batch to be re-tested by accredited third-party laboratories.
The FDA says it expects to announce today when products made with the affected batches between April and June can return to store shelves.
Benzo[a]pyrene is commonly found in tobacco smoke, and vehicle exhaust fumes.
