Northern Taiwan Braces for Up to 900 Millimeters of Rain

The Central Weather Administration is warning that northern mountain areas could receive up to 900 millimeters of rain over the next four days as Super Typhoon Bavi approaches.
Forecasters say the heaviest rainfall is expected in the mountains of New Taipei, Taoyuan, Hsinchu and Miaoli from this evening through Sunday.
New Taipei City's lowland areas could receive as much as 700 millimeters of rain during the same period.
The weather agency says Bavi is expected to pass over waters north of Taiwan, with the most severe conditions forecast from Friday night through Saturday.
Strong winds will also intensify on Friday, with Penghu expected to see Force 8 to 9 gusts during the first half of the day, while western Taiwan and Yilan's coastal areas will see winds gradually strengthen later.
A land typhoon warning is expected to be issued during early hours Friday.
The CWA mid-afternoon issued a sea warning for the Bashi Channel and waters off the northeast and southeast of Taiwan ... uring ships to exercise extreme caution.

It's still far from Taiwan ... with the latest CWA data showing its location was around 870 kilometers east-southeast of Cape Eluanbi ... moving north-northwest and speeds between 17 and 25 kilometers per hour.
Bavi is was packing maximum sustained wind speeds of 184 kilometers per hour near its centre ... with gusts of up to 227 kilometers per hour.
