President Lai Ching-te says his administration will encourage more Taiwan companies to use Guatemala as a base for entering Latin American markets.
This, as Lai held talks with the visiting president of Guatemala's Congress, Luis Alberto Contreras Colindres, where he expressed the confidence that better ties between Taiwan and Guatemala will bring more business opportunities for both sides.
Lai pointed out that two way trade has reached 130-million U-S dollars for two consecutive years now and the Central American country is fast becoming Taiwan's largest supplier of sugar and fourth-largest supplier of coffee.
Lai praised Guatemala for boosting economic and trade ties with Taiwan after the signing of a memorandum of understanding on semiconductor cooperation.
That M-O-U was signed last June and supports Guatemala's Chip Road Project.
Lai also thanked Contreras for signing a resolution in May that supports Taiwan’s participation in international organizations.
