Taiwan has widened its recall of products linked to contaminated cooking oil produced by Central Union Oil, with all processed foods made using the affected oil now ordered off store shelves by midnight tonight.
Minister of Health and Welfare Shih Chung-liang made the announcement ... replacing an earlier order covering only products containing more than 20 percent of the affected oil.
Health officials say all affected secondary products must now be removed as a precaution and can only return to shelves after manufacturers provide test results confirming they are safe.
The expanded recall follows the discovery of excessive levels of the carcinogen benzo[a]pyrene in soybean salad oil produced by Central Union Oil.
The government says it is also reviewing edible oil safety regulations and expanding inspections throughout the production process to help prevent similar incidents.
