Taipei Transit Police have tracked down a 70-year-old man after he accidentally discharged a canister of pepper spray at Taipei Main Station, briefly causing commuters to cough.
Police say the man found the canister near the station's M8 exit and mistakenly thought it was a cooling spray before using it.
After experiencing irritation himself, he threw the canister into a nearby trash bin.
Although several people reported coughing, there were no injuries, no panic and no disruption to metro services.
Police identified the man through surveillance footage and found him in Taichung by mid-afternoon.
He is being investigated for violating the Social Order Maintenance Act ...
... while Taipei Metro will determine whether additional penalties are warranted.
