Lam Wing-kee, the former Hong Kong bookseller who became a symbol of resistance to Beijing's crackdown on free speech, has died in Taiwan at the age of 70.
The Central News Agency says Lam died Thursday evening after a recurrence of cancer and was admitted to a hospital in Taipei earlier this week.
Lam was one of five people linked to Causeway Bay Books who disappeared in 2015 before later describing his detention by Chinese authorities.
He moved to Taiwan in 2019 amid fears of prosecution and reopened his bookstore in Taipei the following year.
President Lai Ching-te expressed his condolences, praising Lam's courage and commitment to freedom.
