The Food and Drug Administration says it will not order a blanket recall of processed foods made with contaminated soybean oil, saying the health risk is low.
Officials say more than 17 metric tons of the tainted oil have already been removed from the market in a nationwide recall .... after excessive levels of the cancer-causing substance benzo[a]pyrene were detected in soybean salad oil supplied by Taichung-based Central Union Oil.
The agency says the contamination affects 18 products across 30 batches, but it will not release the names of hundreds of downstream businesses because the contaminant is expected to be significantly diluted during food processing.
Authorities have ordered all affected soybean oil products off the market and warn businesses that continue selling them could face fines of up to three million NT.
