China ethnic unity law:
Premier Cho Jung-tai says the Lai administration will redouble efforts to protect Taiwan citizens following the introduction of China's Law on Promoting Ethnic Unity and Progress.
However, the premier is not saying what additional measures the government will adopt, or how it will better protect Taiwan citizens.
According to Cho, the law seeks to eliminate the sovereignty of the Republic of China and the public should watch how political parties here in Taiwan react to the law, in particular which parties publicly endorse it and which ones keep silent.
Cho says law has codified China's unification agenda and indicates that Beijing might no longer tolerate and wants to eliminate the "Republic of China."
Meanwhile, Deputy Mainland Affairs Council Minister Shen Yu-chung is urging Taiwanese citizens not to visit China, Hong Kong and Macau unless necessary, in the wake of the law taking effect.
Shen says his agency will work with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and consult with foreign embassies and representative offices in Taiwan to identify which countries have mutual judicial assistance agreements with China and which countries are considered to lean toward Beijing.
