A traditionalist Catholic group has defied Pope Leo XIV by consecrating four bishops without Vatican approval.
The Society of St. Pius X carried out the ceremony at its seminary in Écône {PRO: EI - CONE}, Switzerland, despite a last-minute appeal from the pope to cancel it.
The Vatican says the consecrations amount to a schismatic act and automatically excommunicate the bishops involved.
The Society says it acted out of what it calls a sacred duty to defend the Catholic faith.
The ceremony marks the first major crisis for Leo, who has prioritized church unity and healing tensions with traditionalists that worsened during the Pope Francis pontificate.
