Two dead, 487 flood incidents logged as torrential rains pound Taiwan

At least two people have died as torrential rain entered a second day in
Taiwan, triggering widespread flooding and emergency rescues across the
island.

The Ministry of Economic Affairs had said nearly 500 flooding incidents have
been reported since yesterday, with Kaohsiung, Pingtung, Taipei and Tainan
among the hardest-hit areas.

Officials say floodwaters have stranded residents, inundated homes and forced
rescue teams to carry out evacuations in parts of southern Taiwan.

Forecasters say the heavy rain is being fueled by a seasonal weather front,
strengthened southwesterly winds and the outer bands of Tropical Storm
Mekkhala.

Forecasters warn that heavy rain is expected to continue through this evening
... although conditions should gradually improve over the weekend.
