Burnham wins special election, setting up challenge with Starmer

Now turning to international news in the UK,

Andy Burnham of the ruling Labor Party has won a special election for a seat
in Parliament...

setting him up to challenge Prime Minister Keir Starmer for control over the
party and country.

The mayor of Greater Manchester, Burnham defeated opposition Reform UK's
candidate to strengthen his status as a leading contender to replace Starmer.

Burnham took almost 55% of the vote.

The PM's popularity has declined since a landslide victory in 2024, with the
UK still struggle with economic growth and public services.

Burnham's win increases pressure on Starmer to resign.

Burnham plans to head to London to be sworn in, and may seek a meeting with
Starmer to discuss leadeship.
