The head of Taiwan's Intellectual Property Office says two companies currently suing T-S-M-C for patent infringement appear to be so-called 'patent trolls'.
T-I-P-O Director General Liao Cheng-wei (廖承威) says the two Irish firms are seeking licensing fees or settlement payments rather than producing products based on the patents in question.
The companies have filed a complaint with the U-S International Trade Commission, accusing T-S-M-C of using their patented technology in chip production.
Liao says T-S-M-C is challenging the validity of the patents through the U-S patent review process.
He also expressed confidence in the chipmaker's research capabilities and intellectual property portfolio.
