The Legislative Yuan has approved amendments to the Waste Disposal Act that significantly increase penalties for illegal dumping and other environmental offenses.
Under the changes, offenders could face up to seven years in prison and fines of up to $15 million NT.
The law also gives authorities new high-tech tools to track waste shipments and crack down on illegal dumping.
Penalties can be increased further if violations occur in environmentally sensitive areas.
The amendments also give authorities greater powers to freeze assets and recover environmental cleanup costs from offenders.
Environmental officials say the changes are aimed at strengthening enforcement, improving waste management and supporting the development of a circular economy.
