China Detains American Scholar on Espionage Suspicion

Chinese authorities say they have arrested an American scholar on suspicion
of espionage.

China's Foreign Ministry says Min Zin is suspected of activities that harmed
China's national security.

Min Zin, who writes about Myanmar and Chinese foreign policy, disappeared
earlier this month while attending a conference in China.

It is relatively uncommon for Beijing to publicly accuse a U.S. citizen of
national security offenses.

The arrest comes just a month after U-S President Donald Trump met Chinese
President Xi Jinping as the two countries seek to improve relations.
