Death toll from Philippines earthquake rises

Now turning to international news...

The death toll from Monday's powerful earthquake in the southern Philippines
has risen to at least 47, with 31 people still missing and more than 45,000
displaced.

Three days later, the crisis is far from over.

The mayor of one of the hardest-hit towns is requesting that air force
helicopters deliver food to villages cut off by landslides...

as ten communities remain inaccessible, and with power still yet to be
restored, phone service is still spotty.

Officials told media that people in those areas are going hungry.

The 7.8 magnitude quake, the largest to hit the Philippines in half a
century, damaged more than 12,600 homes across farming towns and cities.

Many residents remain too traumatized by aftershocks to return home.
