US students' test scores demonstrate generational difference
Posted on 2026-06-10 17:08:13
New data from the US shows a difference in two generations when it comes to
students' academic recovery after the pandemic.

Nine-year-olds have bounced back to pre-pandemic reading levels, showing
improvements in math.

But 13-year-olds' scores are sitting at the same level as when the test first
launched back in 1971.

Experts warn this isn't just a pandemic problem.

Scores were already falling before COVID hit, peaking in 2012 and declining
alongside the rise of social media.

Today, only 14% of teenagers say they read for fun every day, which is down
from 37% in the early 90s.

With those 13-year-olds now heading into high school, officials say serious
action must be taken to combat this decline.
