DPP raises concerns over proposal to change Nationality Act
Posted on 2026-06-10 17:08:13
The DPP is raising concerns over KMT-proposed changes to the Nationality Act.

Lawmaker Wang Ding Yu took to social media to say that changes pushed for by
the opposition risk allowing Chinese nationals to run for president.

KMT caucus Secretary-General Lin Pei Xiang is calling the claim
"misinformation," stating that the Elections and Recall act says that Chinese
nationals cannot run for president or vice president.

This comes as KMT Caucus Whip Fu Kun Chi has proposed to amend the
Nationality Act to allow Chinese nationals who have acquired Taiwanese
citizenship but not given up their foreign nationality to run for public
office.

If the amendment were to pass, it would negate Article 20 of the Nationality
Act, which states that those with dual nationality must give up the foreign
one within one year of taking office.

Lin Pei Xiang adds that the amendment aims to address controversy that
erupted earlier this year over former lawmaker Li Zhen Xiu...

who holds Chinese citizenship.
