Philippines Earthquake Death Toll Rises to 32

The death toll from a powerful earthquake in the southern Philippines has
risen to 32, with most of the victims killed in a landslide in Sarangani.

The magnitude-7-point-8 quake struck in the morning, causing buildings to
collapse and triggering small tsunami waves.

Local officials say more than 200 people were injured, while significant
damage was reported in General Santos.

Tsunami waves were detected as far away as Japan, although the Pacific
Tsunami Warning Center later lifted its alert.

Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has ordered disaster response
efforts as rescue and recovery operations continue.

The Philippines is frequently affected by earthquakes because it lies along
the Pacific "Ring of Fire".
