China Bars New Zealand Lawmakers Over Taiwan Visit
Posted on 2026-06-04 19:09:14
China has banned four New Zealand lawmakers from entering the country for one year and demanded an apology over their visit to Taiwan.
According to reports, the message was delivered by the Chinese Embassy and marks the first time New Zealand parliamentarians have faced such sanctions from Beijing.
Two of the lawmakers have rejected the demand for an apology.
The New Zealand government says it plans to raise its concerns with China.
Beijing, which claims Taiwan as its territory, routinely opposes visits by foreign politicians to the island and views such trips as a challenge to its sovereignty claims.
The dispute comes despite generally stable relations between China and New Zealand, with China remaining New Zealand's largest trading partner.
