Taiwan may miss 2025 carbon reduction target
Posted on 2026-06-03 19:16:13
Taiwan may fall short of its original 2025 carbon reduction target, despite
steady cuts in emissions.
Environment Minister Peng Chi-ming says emissions may be down about 9 percent
from 2005 levels this year.
That would be close to the original 10 percent target, but still short of it.
The Ministry of Environment says Taiwan's 2024 net greenhouse gas emissions
were about 251-million metric tons.
That was down 6.59 percent from 2005, and down 1.92 percent from 2023.
The ministry says energy sector emissions fell below the 2005 level for the
first time.
Peng says strong economic growth could still raise electricity use as
companies expand production.
He says Taiwan must cut nearly 20 percent more over the next five years to
meet its 2030 goal.
