KMT Chairwoman Cheng Li-wun has arrived in San Francisco at the start of a
U.S. visit focused on cross-strait peace.

Cheng says the trip is aimed at telling U.S. and international contacts that
Taiwanese people hope for peace.

Before leaving Taiwan, she said she also wants to help keep Washington out of
what she called an "avoidable war."

Cheng said the KMT is a loyal and responsible force for maintaining peace
across the Taiwan Strait.

She also said she would be willing to meet U.S. President Donald Trump if the
opportunity arose.

But Cheng noted she does not hold public office and is chair of an opposition
party.

The KMT says Cheng will visit San Francisco, Boston, New York, Washington and
Los Angeles during the 15-day trip.

The party says she will meet members of Congress, U.S. officials, think tanks
and overseas Taiwanese communities.

It has not disclosed the names or ranks of the U.S. officials, citing past
practice and U.S. protocols.
