MOFA urges role in Japan-Philippines EEZ discussion
Posted on 2026-06-02 17:20:13
Taiwan is calling on Japan and the Philippines to protect Taiwan's rights as
they discuss overlapping maritime claims.

The Foreign Ministry says the talks involve exclusive economic zones east of
Taiwan.

Spokesman Hsiao Kuang-wei says Taiwan will keep consulting Tokyo and Manila
on maritime issues.

He says that will be done under existing fisheries agreements with both
countries.

Hsiao says Japan and the Philippines have not yet released details of the
proposed boundaries.

But he says Taiwan will ask both countries to hold talks with Taipei and
protect Taiwanese fishermen.

The ministry also criticized China for sending coast guard ships to waters
east of Taiwan.

It says Beijing should not use the case to push its claims over Taiwan.
