A mosaic of a prancing bull on the floor of Milan’s Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II arcade is being restored, because tourists have worn away the tiles representing its testicles.
Superstition has it that visitors who grind their heels on the bull’s testicles and then spin around three times are granted good fortune and are fated to return to the mosaic.
City councillors said that thousands of people do that every day, leaving a small crater where the testicles should be.
The mosaic was last restored in 2017.
One councillor said that the Galleria was a piece of living heritage, “which can wear away precisely because it is loved and experienced.”
He added that they take of it, so that can continue to be loved and experienced.
