Trump remarks do not signal Taiwan policy shift: Jamestown head

The head of the Washington-based The Jamestown Foundation says recent remarks by U-S President Donald Trump about Taiwan do not signal a change in long-standing American policy.
Today in Taipei, foundation president Peter Mattis said the key point was that Trump repeatedly stated U-S policy toward Taiwan had not changed during a recent interview following his trip to China.
Trump had said he was 'not looking' for Taiwan to declare independence, while also emphasizing that 'nothing's changed' in U-S policy.
Mattis said Washington's position has long been that Taiwan's future should be decided peacefully and without coercion.
He also rejected speculation that pending U-S arms sales to Taiwan could be tied to American military operations in Iran.
Taiwan's Presidential Office says it has not received any formal notification from Washington regarding changes to planned arms sales.
