The award-winning novel "Taiwan Travelogue" is set to be adapted into a television series .... through a Taiwan-Japan co-production.
The book, first published in 2020, earlier this week became the first Taiwanese literary work to win the International Booker Prize.
Written by Yang Shuang-zi and translated into English by Lin King, the historical fiction work is set during the Japanese colonial era and follows two women traveling across Taiwan by railway while exploring themes of identity, empire and cultural exchange.
Taiwanese producer Chang Chen-yu (張辰漁) said his company secured the screen adaptation rights after Japanese partners strongly recommended the novel.
Chang described the story as combining a sensory journey through 1930s Taiwan with deeper reflections on language and colonial power.
He said the production team hopes to work with international partners to bring the story to wider audiences.
