The Food and Drug Administration is cracking down on deceptive food advertisements by introducing strict new guidelines for businesses and online influencers.
The FDA released its guidelines earlier this week and announced today that businesses using puns, misspelled words, or metaphors to imply that their food products have medical benefits can face fines of up to $5 million NT.
Under the new rules, any promotion that encourages a purchase is considered an advertisement.
This includes paid sponsorships or product reviews shared by internet influencers.
And officials warn that even if an ad avoids mentioning a specific disease, it can still be ruled illegal if a consumer is led to believe the food has medical properties.
