Taichung Councilor Warns "Great Wall" of Mattresses Undermining Rat

A Taichung city councilor says a nearly one-kilometer wall of discarded
mattresses in Tanzi (潭子) District is undermining the city's "No Rats"
prevention and clean-up campaign ...

... which kicked off over the weekend.

Lai Chao-kuo (賴朝國) of the KMT went on to say that mattresses typically
contain metal springs ...

... and sanitation workers dismantling them by hand can process only a few
each day ...

... making the work labor-intensive and economically inefficient.

The city's Environmental Protection Bureau says Taichung handles around 70
thousand discarded mattresses each year ...

... but about 20 thousand remain unprocessed after a previous procurement
tender failed, and a second tender is now underway.
