Legislature to Hold Historic Vote May 19th on Lai Impeachment Motion

Lawmakers are set to vote tomorrow on an impeachment motion against President Lai Ching-te ...
... marking the first presidential impeachment case in Taiwan's constitutional history.
The motion was launched by the opposition K-M-T and Taiwan People's Party after Premier Cho Jung-tai refused to countersign legislation changing how tax revenues are divided between the central and local governments.
Both opposition parties accuse Lai of violating the Constitution, disregarding the Legislative Yuan ... and refusing to implement or budget for laws that it has passed.
In response, the ruling D-P-P says the impeachment effort is political theater and has confirmed its lawmakers will vote against the motion.
The impeachment is expected to fail, as the opposition coalition controls 62 seats in the 113-member legislature — short of the two-thirds majority needed to refer the case to the Constitutional Court.
