DPP and KMT clash over funding for cut defense items
Posted on 2026-05-16 12:57:13
The DPP and KMT are arguing over how to pay for weapons left out of a special
defense budget bill.

The bill passed last week with a cap of 780-billion NT for U.S.-approved
weapons sales to Taiwan.

But it left out items including drones, unmanned surface vessels,
counter-drone systems and anti-ballistic missiles.

Premier Cho Jung-tai says the Cabinet is weighing three options to cover
those costs.

Those include another special budget bill, a higher 2026 general budget, or a
larger 2026 defense budget.

The DPP says the opposition cut the original plan and forced the government
to find another solution.

The KMT says the funding should go through the 2027 general budget so it can
face fuller public review.

Lawmakers also voted Friday to extend the current legislative session through
the end of August.
