Japanese director warns AI could weaken art
Posted on 2026-05-16 12:27:16
Japanese filmmaker Koji Fukada says AI could weaken the creative process
behind art.

Fukada made the comments at the Cannes Film Festival, where his new drama,
"Nagi Notes," is premiering.

He says using AI to create artwork or video can skip the human process and
jump straight to the result.

Fukada says that process is important because it helps artists express
themselves and better understand the world.

"Nagi Notes" is set in rural Japan and follows a Tokyo architect who visits a
village to pose for a sculpture.

The film also shows two young boys exploring their feelings for each other.

Fukada says he hopes future audiences will see characters of all sexual
orientations as a normal part of dramas.

"Nagi Notes" is competing for Cannes' top Palme d'Or prize.
