Taiwan launches final Anping-class patrol vessel

Taiwan has launched the 12th and final 600-tonne Anping-class patrol vessel
for the Coast Guard.

The new ship is named Donggang and was christened Friday at a ceremony in
Kaohsiung.

Officials say the launch completes the Anping-class fleet under Taiwan's
indigenous shipbuilding program.

Ocean Affairs Council Minister Kuan Bi-ling says the program began in 2018 to
build 141 coast guard vessels over 10 years.

She says Taiwan's coast guard now faces growing pressure from gray-zone
activity, Chinese incursions and threats to undersea cables.

Officials say the new vessel can handle patrol, fishery protection and rescue
work in peacetime.

It can also support maritime defense under Taiwan's civil-military
mobilization system when needed.

The Donggang will be deployed with a mobile coast guard unit in eastern
Taiwan to strengthen regional patrols.
