Peru heads for polarized presidential runoff
Posted on 2026-05-16 10:38:18
Peru's presidential race is heading to a June runoff between leftist Roberto
Sanchez and right-wing candidate Keiko Fujimori.

Official results show Fujimori won the first round with just over 17-percent
of the vote.

Sanchez narrowly took second place with about 12-percent.

He finished around 21-thousand votes ahead of conservative candidate Rafael
Lopez Aliaga.

Sanchez says Peru needs a broad democratic coalition and may announce his
cabinet next week.

Fujimori is promising to crack down on crime, one of voters' top concerns.

The long vote count led to fraud claims, but European Union observers say
they found no concrete evidence.

Analysts warn the runoff could be sharply polarized, with many Peruvians
looking for more moderate leadership.
