US Democratic senators urge Trump to move on Taiwan arms sale
Posted on 2026-05-16 10:38:13
Several Democratic U.S. senators are urging President Donald Trump to move
forward with a 14-billion US dollar arms sale to Taiwan.

The call came after Trump met Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing.

Trump says he and Xi talked a lot about Taiwan, but he made no commitment on
the issue.

He also says he will soon decide on U.S. arms sales to Taiwan.

Democratic senators say they are concerned the two leaders discussed
Washington's legal duty to help Taiwan defend itself.

They are calling on the Trump administration to formally notify Congress
about the sale.

Congress had pre-approved the package in January.

The senators say Congress will keep backing Taiwan and oppose attempts to
change the status quo by force or coercion.
