Te Arikinui Kuini Nga Wai hono i te po, New Zealand's Maori Queen, met with King Charles III at Buckingham Palace today.
This marks the nearly 200-year relationship between the Maori, the indigenous peoples of New Zealand, and the British crown.
This was the first meeting between the 29-year-old Queen and King Charles since she acceded to the throne following the death of her father, Kiingi Tuheitia.
The monarch of the Maori is a largely ceremonial role created in the 19th century, as different Maori tribes decided to nominate a unifying figure, like a European king or queen, to face the incoming British.
