A recent survey by a KMT-run think tank suggests that mainstream public opinion in Taiwan favours maintaining an equal distance from both the United States and China.
The National Policy Foundation's poll shows that 44 per cent believe that Taiwan should not lean too heavily towards either side.
27 per cent favour moving closer to the U.S., while only 12 per cent prefer closer relations with China.
In addition, more than 40 percent of respondents said they 'somewhat distrust' or 'completely distrust' the United States.
And a majority, at 53 per cent, said they were not worried about the Trump-Xi summit that wraps up today.
